Libraries are vital pillars of the Diamond Open Access (OA) ecosystem, providing infrastructure, services, and expert support to institutional publishers. Many libraries are also publishers in their own right. To engage libraries in advancing Diamond OA in Europe, the DIAMAS project launched a Conversation Series for libraries. Throughout the series we will explore opportunities to co-create guidelines, recommendations, advocacy resources and practical tools. In the first session, on 30 May 2024, we focus on sharing advocacy resources and research on the landscape and sustainability of Diamond OA in European higher education institutions.

Following a brief overview of the key findings from the DIAMAS 2023 survey on Diamond OA publishing, the event focused on the pressing issue of financial sustainability for European small- and medium-size publishers and their service providers. Drawing on the results of extensive research, light was shed on key sustainability considerations and challenges faced by them. Participants also gained valuable insights into the diverse funding mechanisms implemented by publishers and their feasibility, emphasising the indispensable role of the workforce in sustaining Diamond OA publishing. The impact of infrastructure and shared services on the viability and continuity of publication services was also examined.
These insights served as a catalyst for a discussion focusing on the participants’ academic library’s experience, challenges and publishing needs.
